AIM 5.9 hangs on first run after successful install

I installed AIM 5.9. Completes normally. Upon attempt to execute
though it only gets as far as the notification "...default instant
messaging program. Would you like to set it as your default?" At
this point the program is hung and can only kill via the Task Manager.

I've unintalled and reinstalled and gotten the same behavior.
Any assistance as to what's going on here would be much appreciated.
