AGP4x slot - what can i upgrafe to?

Hi everyone. My first post (to the right forum)- wow! Am going to build
a new PC as totally hacked of with Evesham who have - no i can't talk
about it , it''s too painfull.

Anyway i thought I'd warm up/practice by upgrading my current PC
which has a Asus P4B533 motherboard which has a AGP4x slot . Looking at
ATI's website it says that a lot of there more modern graphic cards (my
current one is a 9700 pro - i understand this was sexy in 2002) will
work with AGP4x. However, will i be wasting my money if i buy something
optimised for 8x? any other advice would be more than welcome.

I hope you don't get too fed up with my questions - i am truly ignorant
about the innards of PCS but after my expereince with Evesham i am
never going to buy a PC from a big company again.

Hi,

An 8X AGP card will work fine in an AGP4X slot. The real world difference in
speed between running a card at AGP4X and AGP8X is barely noticeable...

However, if you are going to be building a complete new PC in the near
future, you will be wasting your money buying an AGP card at this point in
time.
AGP is now an outgoing technology, having been replaced by the PCI-express
interface. Therefore the new AGP card will probably not be re-useable in the
new PC setup.

Most new motherboards now being released are PCI-express, and pretty soon,
all of them will be, and AGP will be a distant memory.......

Save your pennies to put towards the new system when the time comes to build
it up... That way you be able to get the "sexiest" PCI-express graphics card
out there at that time....

If you really must insist on upgrading the current AGP setup, an AGP nVidia
6600GT card is supposed to give the best value for money with excellent
performance(bang for buck) at this point in time..
