AGP no go PCI OK in WinXP ???

I just changed the same motherboard (A7V8X-X got toasted) that
previously had the ATI Radeon 8500 in it. I just upgraded the CPU to a
AMD 3200+ with Cosrair XMS 3200 ram. Now the only video cards that
allow the system to boot are PCI. Any AGP cards won't boot. I have
tried my Matrox 550 as well as the ATI and have had the same problems.
Any idea why the PCI ancient cards work but the AGP don't ? I have
installed the current VIA KT400 4in1 drivers doesn't seem to help

Help...

"Won't boot"? Does the monitor come on? Will it POST? Can you get into BIOS?
Do the fans come on? Can you boot off CD, floppy or Safe Mode? I am trying
to find if this is hardware or software issue.

PS I have sucessfully installed two different PCI cards an old
Creative 3D extreme and a S3 Virge. Both cards allow me to get into my
normal start WinXP screen and all my applications work perfectly.

I have read of problems fixed by re-installing motherboard chipset AGP
drivers. A WinXP repair install (boot off WinXP CD) may fix. Do you have the
latest BIOS installed? Try experimenting with all BIOS settings like AGP
Fast Writes. I wonder if your power supply is problem. I had a motherboard
that I damaged by hooking front panel connectors in wrong place. It would no
longer work with my 9700 Pro but a 8500, and other AGP cards, would work
fine. So could be bad motherboard. You are at the point where "replace with
known good" is your only option.

Good luck. Post back when fixed.

I have the same exact problem with a Radeon 9200 SE. I also tried
another AGP card and it also didn't work. I can get into the Bios but
can not start WinXP. I tried to do a clean install of the operating
system but the WinXP CD hangs up early in the insall process and
crashes. I have installed the latest bios and 4 in 1 drivers from
Asus's site. I have posted a question on their Intl. Help Desk and
hopefully will get some useful advice.

dave AKA vwdoc1

did the install stop at 18%?
I had a problem similar with another brand of MB
A new PS helped, but it also stopped at 18% but errors took longer to
materialize, but it was a defective Kingston ram module! I bought another
brand = no more problems. I also exchanged the Kingston = no more problems
except I am out more $$$ but now have twice as much ram. <g>
later,
