Age of Empires II: Age of Kings

I cannot launch AoE II on my XP pro machine. The intro videos play fine but
then I do not get the main menu, but a blank screen (with mouse pointer). It
stops responding so I must kill it with the task manager, but that messes up
the graphics + I must reboot to fix them.

I did have Conquerors (Expansion) installed but then I uninstalled both and
reinstalled only AoE II but this didn't fix it.

Have also tried patch and compatibility mode (it worked when I had Windows
2000).

Did rollback system however after installing it first time (but not running
it) & then had to reinstall (i did not restore because of AoE). Could this
have caused the problem?

How can this be fixed?

I had the same experience. Sorry, I found no way to make it work.
These programs not built with XP in mind.

The only solution I had was to install and run them on another machine
which still has Windows 98 on it.
