the windows update site comes back with: "thanks for your
interest, you must be using a ms windows product to
access the service."

I use explorer 6.0 and windows xp home, sp1.
..

Thanks for the reply. I understand those are security
updates, and I'll install them asap.
My original questions stands: how do I fix XP so I can
take adavntage of automatic updates using the
windowsupdate.microsoft.com site

Right click "My Computer."
Select "Properties."
Go to "Automatic Updates."
Make sure "Keep my computer up to date...." is checked.

You'll have three selections beneath there:
1. Notify me before downloading any updates or installing.
2. Download updates automatically and notify me when they're ready to be
installed (default.)
3. Download updates and install them on a schedule (with a selection for how
often, and at what time.)

There's a link under the third if you want more information on "Scheduled
Installing."

If you have to ask if your copy of XP is 32 or 64 bit, it's 32.

Can't download any updates and/or you receive an error message: Go to
Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the following
commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Then try the install again.

Other suggested fixes for Windows Updates are listed here, as well.
