Again, blocked sites

The combination of Vista and IE7 have conspired to keep me from sites that
even the security monitors list as not dangerous or infected or anything
else. By allowing/enabling anything with Active X in the line and downloading
Shockwave (for a game), I got things working for one day. The next day, I was
back to being shut out. I need the kind of help and explanation you would
give to your mother--but don't tell me to give up the computer. Sites blocked
include Yahoo Mail and athletic sites with 'cstv' in the address. I've tried
putting both in allowed sites list; there is nothing in restricted sites
list. I've put my security at barely existent. My laptop, running off a
wireless router, has XP and who knows which IE. It opens everything I want
opened. Any suggestions that I'll be able to follow?

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Security.
Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode" and click on
"Reset all zones to default level" and click Apply.
Go back and place a check next to "Enable Protected Mode"
and click OK, then relaunch Internet Explorer.

That's where I would go.
