After using Ad-Aware, I can't see any websites

I ran Ad-Aware 6 (the free version), to get rid of all that awful spyware.
I use XP home edition. Afterward I can't connect to the net. My internet
connection is connected. I phone the support at my ISP, we get a ping in
dos when we ping IP addresses, but no ping for websites.

Why did all this happen after ad-aware cleaned out spyware. could removing
info in the registry do this???

This is really frustrating as I was just able to download Ad-Aware from its
own website - install and run it and then I can't access websites, email,
etc.

thanks for any advice that will help me fix this!

What are you using for a browser? Is it IE, Netscape, etc. Ad-aware should
have no effect on a *name brand* browser.

I'd say as they can't ping websites in command mode, this has nothing to do
with the browser?

.Sometimes ad-aware will remove something that it should
not have, that is why items removed after a scan go into a
quarantined folder. Open this folder and go through each
item and see if you can reconize a listing that you do
not believe should be there and restore it.Or restore all
and hopefully the web access will start working again.
Good luck

If you mean you are trying to ping "websites" by name, such as microsoft.com, and you get no response, it sounds like a DNS problem. Make sure you are using the correct DNS server from your ISP. A way to test this is to do a c:\nslookup www.microsoft.com and if you get an IP address back then DNS is working. Then try pinging that IP address.

Something to try...
Search the hard disk for a file named HOSTS (no extension). If found,
rename it to HOSTS.BAK. Ignore any HOSTS files that have extensions.

Thanks, but I restored everything from the quarantine - still no luck. What
shall I do?

What do I do if the DNS is not working?

I remember reading that the older version of Adaware could damage or
otherwise alter the TCP/IP stack that is needed for the tasks you describe.
There was at the time a registry fix that they[Adaware] provided to
counteract this. It may be worth a search with Google or as an avenue to
explore.

It was a winsock repair file. I will try to find it and report back.
