After uninstalling Nero can't copy pics to cd

I just had a new pc custom built with xp pro, 64 bit and the builder
installed Nero cd burner on it. I uninstalled the Nero program 'cause I just
want to use the built-in capabilities of xp to burn photos to a cd. My
builder said xp is not capable of that but I know differently(I think...).
Problem is, when I try to burn pics to a cd now I get an error saying "there
is no disk in the drive. Please insert a writable cd...." I've tried new
CDRs, CDRWs, different brands, a CDRW that I had already burned pics onto
with xp home on my old pc, etc., etc, etc. It just keeps telling me the same
thing. I've re-installed the drivers for the cd burner, a Lite-on DVDRW
SHW-160p6s and also re-installed the drivers for the primary and secondary
IDE channels. I've un-checked and re-checked the "Enable Recording" box
under the Recording tab in the cd player properties. Could Nero have
corrupted the cd burning files? And does anyone have any other ideas? All
responses will be appreciated.

Actually, you'd be much better off with Nero. It can do many more
things than XP can, and offers many more options for burning.

I think you're probably right but I gotta know what's happened with the xp.
I guess it's the principle of the thing....

I use Roxio but they probably have the same problem as Nero. Roxio has
something called Drag-to-Disk which is started at boottime. This takes
control of your burner. Nero probably installs something similar that allows
you to drag files to a blank CD. Disable this from startup or shut it down
if it is running.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. I could not find the specific culprit(s) anywhere
in startup items or processes but it gave me an idea that worked. After
reading your post I remembered that when I uninstalled Nero it wasn't real
clean, so I did a search for a Nero uninstaller and found this:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Nero-Clean-Tool-Bundle-Download-22222.html.
I was obviously not the first to have had such problems with the Nero
program and.... guess what? This little guy cleaned things up real well. My
xp burner works great now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Be afraid--down this path lies madness. ;-)

There are *very* many things that happen on XP machines that are
*never* understood by anyone...

Yes, the "complete uninstall" is getting to be a vanishing breed. ;-(

For a worst case example, look at any commercial anti-virus package.
They are actually very resistant virus infections themselves.
