I have a Compaq Laptop running Windows XP Home; each time
it starts up it shows the wallpaper, but doesn't display
the desktop or icons or the start menu. The only way to
do anything is to use the task manager. "explorer.exe" is
not running under tasks and if manually started,
immediately quits it. Also, some application settings
have been removed, such as the favorites in Internet
explorer. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Since these files are windows system files, then try the
system file checker tool. Click start, run, and type in
this here; "sfc /scannow" with that space after the sfc.
It will ask for your XP CD to copy any needed files from,
and it runs as Windows file Protection. If you don't have
a XP CD, try to borrow one from someone.
