Frustrated

I have a home wireless network connecting two desktops
and a laptop using ICS on one of the desktops. The setup
has worked flawlessly for almost 2 years. I installed
SP2 on my laptop without a problem, but I installed it on
my main desktop and now the other computers are prompted
to enter in a password for the guest account (which is
greyed out) in order to access the shares but only on
this desktop. It can access the shares on the other
desktop and laptop without a problem. I have never had
any accounts set up (or passwords) and I have allowed
sharing across the network. So what do I enter in or
even better how do I stop this?

Ipconfig, and net view all look fine. I have disabled
the "new" MS firewall protection. computer browser
service is running on all PCs. I am stumped.

Simple File Sharing enabled on the desktop perhaps? You may wish
to disable it (Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder options, View,
Simple File Sharing), thereby setting the computer back to
Classic File Sharing.

If that's not it, please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm for some more details.

Read my earlier post, it may help...

After changing my main home LAN server from XPProsp1 to XPProsp2, on my
clients side, when I go to 'My Network Places/entire network/M.W.N/(my
workgroup)/(my server)":

1. Like normal my Win2KPro clients pop up the "Connect as dialog", I enter
my name & password, and everything works great.

2. On my other WinXPsp1(not pro) boxes, somehow they now skip the "Connect
as dialog", go straight into the server's printer/scheduled tasks/shared
folders listing. (bad) Then when I click on a shared folder, 5-10 seconds
pass, then I get an error "....Inaccessible....You may not have
permission.....".

Before I installed sp2 on my main server, my other WinXPsp1 boxes worked
correctly just like my Win2K boxes still do.

After checking the "event viewer/system" on my XPProsp2 server box, I
noticed that when a XPsp1 box attempt access, they create the following
warning:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
MrxSmb -> The redirector failed to determine the connection type.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Win2KPro boxes don't create any warnings, they just work fine...

What's going on, how can I get my untouched XPsp1 boxes to generate the
"connect as dialog" & allow the file shares to work just like they did
yesterday, like the way my Win2KPro boxes still work today?

Additional: On the XPsp1 boxes, no warning, or, error events were logged.

Solution:

Somehow, on the new XPsp2pro server box, the Guest account became enabled.
Once I disabled the Guest account, the XPsp1 boxes produced the 'Connect As'
form to be filled in.

I'm still not sure why this only affected the XPsp1 boxes & not the 2Kpro
boxes.

Brian,

thanks, good info. I wasn't aware of this.

All of my boxes are XP Home addition, so as I understand
it they only have simple file sharing.

I have tried enabling and disabling the Guest account but
it doesn't seem to make a difference. I will have a look
at the event viewer as per your suggestion. If you come
up with any miracle cures, please let me know.....Still
Frustrated.

I have looked at the Event Viewer Security Log and the
following shows up:

Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: Caper
Domain: GATEWAY
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package:
MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Workstation Name: GATEWAY

I also noted that these errors only started to occur
after installing SP2.

Advice please...

The guest account disabling should be on the server side.

Also, make sure that your server has the right account password setting for
Caper. What happens with the guest account bug is that the server on SP2
let's your XP-SP1 client partially in, even with an incorrect account name &
password. So, until you try to access any folders other than the first
master folder, you get a long pause, then the login failure.

Other settings which may help in the XPsp2 servers: (these further protect
your system's security from any anonymous users from being allowed to get
anywhere within your system)

Go into Admin tools/ Local security policy:

Local Policies / user rights assignment /
access this computer from the network = (make sure that the guest account is
not in the listings)
bypass traverse checking = (make sure that the guest account is not in the
listings)

Local Policies / Security Options /
Accounts: Guest account status = disable
Network access: Sharing & security model for local accounts = classic

Brian,

the second, bypass traverse checking, is not necessary when the
first is applied. I would recommend to leave that setting alone.
It could lead to most peculiar errors in the future that are
very difficult to diagnose. It is also generally not necessary
and not recommended.

Thx, I'll keep that in mind...

Additional:

Because of a slight discrepancy in my XPsp2 PC's name after installing SP2,
all my network shortcuts on my client PC took 30-60 seconds before they
would begin to initially work. Deleting the shortcuts, both in & out of "My
network Places", then regenerating them fixed that problem. However, I'm
not sure why this error only appeared on half of my client PCs.
