After scan , no network connections and can't get into device manager

B

Bob L

my daughters machine the overnight scan found

shopathome spyware
vx2.dlmax trojan
vx2.abetterinternet adware
euniverse updated browser modifier
ieplugin spyware

it removed them. Now there are no network connections at all and I can't
get into device manager. Last time she got these is when I downloaded the
beta and cleaned it and I ended up reinstalling.

Any other ideas? I checked a previous post that sent me to a few KB
articles but they all assume that the network connection is still in tact.

Also looking at the log, my daughter didn't allow any of these.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob:

If using XPSP2: command line, type: netsh winsock reset
<enter> and reboot.

Then read posts by plun and Ron Kinner.

To use Windows to rebuild the LSP configuration data

1. Log on to your computer with an account that is part of the
Administrators group.
2. Open a command prompt window. To do this, click Start, click Run, type
cmd, and click OK.

3. At the command prompt, type netsh Winsock reset and press ENTER.
4. When the Winsock reset is finished, The command window shows the
following message:
Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in
order to complete the reset.
If you see this message, restart your machine.

If you are not logged in with an administrator group, you will receive the
following error message:
Unable to reset the Winsock Catalog. Access is denied.
If you receive this message, log off of your computer, and log on with an
account that is part of the Administrators group. Repeat steps 2-4.

5. After you restart your computer, see the KB article at
support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;892350 for more information.

In some instances third-party applications can be affected while connecting
to the Internet or network after you follow these steps. If you notice that
third-party applications are not properly accessing the Internet or network,
you should reinstall the application to restore network functionality.

If you are running any other version of Microsoft Windows, see the KB
article at support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;892350 for information about
how to resolve this problem.

I tried this

Went to this KB, I don't have SP2 installed. Went the the referenced KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817571/ which I can't perform because I
don't even have any network adapters anymore. I can't even get into device
manager. If I go into manage computer and click on device manager it's
blank.

I try to go to control panel add hardware I get a brief hour glass and it
disappears.

Reinstall TCP/IP on a Windows XP-based computer
In Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is a core component of the operating system.
Therefore, you cannot remove TCP/IP in Windows XP. 1. Install TCP/IP on top
of itself. To do this, follow these steps: a. In Control Panel,
double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and
then click Properties.
b. Click Install.
c. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
d. Click Have Disk.
e. In the Copy manufacturer's files from box, type
System_Drive_Letter:\windows\inf, and then click OK.
f. In the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

I think you'd be best served by calling Microsoft Product Support Services
on this one.

They cannot provide support for this beta product, but they are tasked with
providing free support for issues of virus removal, or problems with
security patches.

I'm not absolutely certain that what you removed count as viruses, but lets
try that on and see how they respond.

In the U.S. or Canada, call 1-866-pcsafety. In other parts of the world,
call your local Microsoft subsidiary. The phone call may not be toll free,
but the help will be.

Let us know how it comes out?
