well this takes the cake, harddrive crashed so resinstalled 2000
professional and restored from backup being carefull to select restore
system state and overwrite any files. guess i didnt know what the name
of the computer was or what the domain name was when i installed 2000
because now it wont log me in because "Domain ABC is unavailable".
this blows chunks.

I'd be surprised if there was a domain membership and you didn't know it.
Did you have a domain at one point? Do you still have access to that
network? More info here might help.

this machine was a customer's home machine. no idea what the name of
the computer was or the workgroup. i had hoped, since chose overwrite,
that it wouldnt matter eg. when i tell it to overwrite all files when
restoring and i chose to restore system state that it would just
freaking do it.

customer now says he wants to upgrade to xppro anyway so im just going
to install 2000 professional, then restore from backup, not selecting
system state or overwrite, and then install the xp upgrade, and then
all the programs. would probably have had to re-install a lot of the
programs anyway.
im just hoping that it gets all his email ie olexp etc.

Show the user how to do backups so this isn't a problem in the future -
maybe an external USB/firewire hard drive or something. Best of luck!
