Help.........please!
After my computer has been idle for a while (anything from 1 hour to
overnight) I am unable to connect to the internet or access email via Outlook
Express. 3 other computers on the home network (wired) don't have this
problem. I've switched computers around to different cables (rooms) and still
have the problem.

The problem computer is runnung xp pro all others are win98se. I have set
all power mngmt to never turn anything off. This situation happens whether
I'm connected directly to the Comcast cable modem, to our 8 port hub, and now
with Verizon, directly to thier router.

I have recently formatted the hd and reinstalled winxp pro and all programs.
This was done due to the fact that this (xp) machine has been in the
posession of my 17 year old son and is now mine. I wanted a clean start. Have
run win update and am current with all virus protection and spyware checks.

Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Maybe I'm stating the obvious but have you checked the LAN card's settings
for power-saving options? I've seen numerous cases where these give rise to
weird problems.

obvious........not to me. I'll be looking at that right way........is it
possible for you to point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robert

I found it. It's was checked to "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power". I removed the check. I'll know by later today or by morning
if it cured the issue.
Thanks for the response,
Robert

Being idle overnight brought no change. I was not able to connect until I
rebooted. Before I rebooted I did look at the Local Are Connection Status and
this is what I found:

Status: Connected
Duration: 9:50:45 (this was approx when I had rebooted last night)
Speed: 100.0 Mbps

Under Activitity:

Packets sent: 579 Pakets recieved:404

Any help would be great.

I'm still on the hunt for the cure of my idle computers internet connection
problems.............

Question:
device manager/ network adapters/ intel pro/100 ve network connection/ I
right click and select properties and then select the advanced tab and then
highlight "Smart Power Down" I then have the option of either "enable or
disable".

Could this Smart Power Down property be the reason why my internet
connection is not available after my computer has been idle for a while? What
does it mean if I choose to "disable" this property?
