After brief time system gets real slow

For the first few minutes my computer is on, it is OK. Then it goes
really slow. It happens whether or not I'm connected to the internet.
Any ideas why?

After an initial boot, the computer is fine. It lasts about four
minutes, and then its like all the virtual memory is being used. But
looking in Task Manager it says System idle process is about 98%. I can't
think of what could cause so much of my processing power to disappear on
me. Please, any ideas?
