HI
I have Acer laptop AMD Aspire 3000 with XP SvcPak2 with all latest patches
Was working fine 2 days ago - about month ago put Window OneCare and seemed
to be working ok.
But now when boots up and get to the full use mode Desktop and connects to
wireless nw and see icons starting to fill up system tray -
the arrow cursor just freezes up or disappears and comes back sometimes
and real wacky.
I can operate (like am now) in FailSafe and get nw'g going to put this
question on website

Sometimes the cursor will freeze up even at the User logon screen (
ihave 3 separate User logons)

I tried to revert to latest and other Restore points - that made no diff
Then I suddenly lost all my Restore points - have none listed anymore
now when I try from Failsafe.

Pls help - This laptop heats up quite a bit and bottom of laptop get
s pretty hot and have always had to try keeep it cool plus battery
completely shot - will only work off AC plugged in to keep it going.

Hope can help!

Other than Onecare what are your anti-virus and anti-spyware
arrangements?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

HI Gerry - First thanks for reading my troubles...
I have had for about 3 years runing MS Defender sw running (works
pretty good) then about year ago put SPybot on - works very good and very
proactive...
Then about 2 months ago put on the MS Onecare (seems to have caused some
of my problems - but hard to say or blame it)... I tried to remove ONecare
completely in Failsafe mode but have to be full user mode and I caNOT get the
cursor to move or bring up a cmd window or doing anything most of time in
FUll user mode once the desktop gui and icons come up - the arrow cursor
just freezes or disappears and I end up pulling plug on power.
Thankssss
Phill

OMG OMG !!! It's WORKING finally !!

I found the PROBLEM... The GD battery pack in the laptop was causing
all this freeze up and cursor and keyboard and system freeeeezing up
problems !!!
Not any virus or spyware or anything

I was already running for couple years mainly using the AC plug
but the battery was working for good amount of first few years - bc could
pull the ac plug and walkaround with laptop and still work fine for 5-10
minutes
but about 1 montgh ago I noticed quickly that pulling the ac plug the
laptop would immediatley go DEAD and blank out (power off endofstory) and
(Yellow led lite on front of laptop was no longer comin On). So I knew the
battery looked like it was useless to holding any more charges.
(I thought really this freeze up was more related to the high heating up
undeside of laptop ... it gets pretty hot - but been doing that almost from
start 3-4 years ago... I think all laptops do this too )

So.... out of blue - tonite I just tried unlocking/detaching the Battery
completely from underneath the laptop and with AC plug still as usual
plugged in (the Green little led lite on front comes on as usual - no longer
any Yellow battery led lite comes on)
and the laptop powers up
and PRESTO !!! AMAZING !!!!
Now.. suddenly...
I can EVEN bypass the disk chking blue screen by hitting any key....
Now I know I've made progresss since the laptop is responding immediately
to the keyboard EVEN before Windows gets loaded and even before get to
the Users Logon screen.
Once I get the Logon screen I can FINALLY move the cursor (finger)
around anywhere on screen and successfully logon as Adminstrator or
regular user...
And once Windows desktop comes up and nw turns which seems much fasterrr
now... I can freely move the arrow cursor (like normal ) finally anywhere
around the screen and EVERYTHING is runnning normal again.
ALL I need to do now - is go back and re-enable the Windefender, Spybot
services in Startup and get the full Normal bootup to come back on.
And then re-apply the MS Security updates/patches will have failed over
last few days. And re-run a FULL Spybot and Windefender scan.
And then re-create my Restore Points. (even tho that was useless as a
recovery method - they all gone blown away duyring this cursor freeeze up
fiasco)
(Thanks Microsoft !)

*******
Sooooo - Anybody out there - TRY pulling out your Battery pack if it
has any non-charging or issues and try running off AC plug all by
itself !!!!!!!!!
*******

Geeez - I would have thought the GD Battery driver sw would have handled
this !!
And of course in the Device troubleshooter windows it says the both
Battery drivers a re working properly ! Yeh SURE !!! Great sw Microsoft !

I'm surprised NOONE out there hasn't already run into this on these
crappy Laptops and could have advised this to me and others long ago

Thanks Dave for the tips....
I wll go back with my:
1. WinDefender - free and works
2. Spybot Search & Destroy free and works good
..... and doubtful will go with Windows OneCare - Microsoft is just
trying to crowbar $45 subscription out of me and counting the days down to
shut me off from its use.... great!

Thanks everyone! Hope you learn from my pain!
Phil
