Hello there
I need a computer for uni (in october), but im also a gamer!
if i was building now i would probably go for a 2500xp barton with a nforce
ultra 400 mobo
but i know its the end of the roadmap for socket A
(and i dont want to another situation like my slot A lol)
im just curious what i should expect to be available in late sept? ive heard
the operton will be available by then, but i cant find any real information
on release dates etc, any help in where AMD will b would be very helpful!
Thanks in advance

One mans opinion ..

It will be a long time before the 64 bit CPU's are an up and going in the
mass market.

The Hammer series won't do us much good until the industry and the board
makers settle on a 64 bit PCI standard and the boards come out.
There will be other changes in memory and on the AGP side.
My guess is 18 months to two years.

Right now my thinking is that my newest machine ( incomplete at this
writing ) will be my last one.

Going to the Barton core, SATA Raid, a faster internet connection and a
gee-whiz AGP with a high resolution monitor will, in terms of data
processing, out perform any thing generally available for the next 3 years.

3 years?? That doesn't even outperform the top end Pentium-4's available
now. I expect Opteron and AMD-64s will be outperforming this by
mid-2004, if not before.
