After 2 1/2 HOURS to install - I CANT DO ANYTHING!

Guess Who

Uggghhhh This is killing me!

I downloaded the CTP build 5308 tonight (MSDN). It took MUCH LESS time to
download the ISO than to install! It took less than an hour to download,
but just about 2 1/2 hours to install! But, NOW I can't do ANYTHING!

The computer always end up with a BSOD, which goes away much too quickly to
see what's going on! Every time I restart, it eventually gets into windows,
but once windows is up, I keep getting error messages that the services and
apps running have stopped responding and will shut down. (run DLL as APP,
explorer, etc - you name it, it stops responding!)

I tried to view the drive Vista is installed on so I can install the Geforce
6800 driver, and the Audigy 2 ZS driver I downloaded thru XP. Of course,
that stops responding, then blue screens. I tried to install the drivers in
safe mode, and I kept getting the "stopped responding" errors and these
drivers would not install. So basically, I spent 5 hours tonight, for
NOTHING!

I've installed this on a DELL Dimension 9100 with 2 x 500GB hard drives (no
RAID). I have a total of 8 partitions on the 2 drives. (C: is my XP
drive... I installed Vista on D: (80 GB partition).

Hardware:
Intel 945 Chipset / Pentium D 3.2Ghz
Geforce 6800 256MB PCI- express
Audigy 2 ZS sound card
3 GB total (2 x 1 GB, 2 x 512MB) Dual channel DDR2 533 Mhz DIMMS
9 in 1 Card reader
16x DL DVD +/- R/RW
48X CDRW
external 200GB Firewire drive (Seagate)
Canon LIDE 60 scanner
Konica Minolta 2400W laser

I Think that's about it.....

How do I get this thing running???

Yeah, I would also do that. I would recollect that it will be
astronomically better than 5308. My guess is it will be coming out in a
week or thereabouts.

Have you tried booting in safe mode? I get BSOD with certain drivers
installed. For example I keep getting drivers for a Matrox card from Windows
Update. But every time I install one I get a blue screen at startup. If safe
mode gets you around the faulty driver, you may be able to disable the
corresponding device from there.

I got a BSOD every once in a while - totally random but reinstalled the
whole thing and this time instead of taking 8 hours to do (literally did,
went to bed and woke up and still bloody installing), it only took an hour
and a half - the wireless drivers still don't work and cause it to BSOD but
still, at least it doesn't randomly restart )

No, I installed to a different, empty, partition. Tried again in vain
tonight, no luck. I can move about fine in Safe Mode, but I really can't do
much there. Changed a few settings, but could not install anything.

I tried on my laptop tonight -- after 3 1/2 hours, and the screen just
sitting there, no disk activity or anything, I just shut the laptop off and
my XP pro was restored.

What a HUGE letdown!

Did you install to the same partition or a different one?

I've tried to install 3 TIMES! It's REALLY frustrating waiting over 2
hours, only to find out it doesn't work. Why does it take over 2 hours to
install? I can fully install Windows XP w/SP2 in about 19 minutes! Why 2 -
2 1/2 hours?

I finally got to install on my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705) when deleting
the XP Partition altogether and installing 5308 to C:\, but again, I have no
wireless access, things are EXTREMELY slow, I can't install a graphics
driver, and it's practically useless.

I do hope the newer builds will install under 2 hours and can be used for
something other than staring at a 640 x 480 ugly screen.

The best you can do is to try the next available build which is BETA 2,
expected to be released on Tueday.

LOL, when Vista was still longhorn, Microsoft were promising it would only
take 20 minutes to install!!! Perhaps they missed off the "2 Hours And..."
bit...

They said that staged builds would surprise us, so far it has not. Still,
there is a ways to go until RTM, so I am gonna play optimist game until
then.
