afer warming up desktop locks up

S

seamstress

after my computer has been on for about 1/2 hr. the desktop will lock up and
I have to manually turn it off and back on. This started yesterday morning.
Nothing new had happened except I was going to run Spybot, was checking out
the advanced, heeded their warning and clicked on default, it only found one
spyware threat. but since this, clean my pc registry program that i finally
got rid of 3 months ago, pops up on start up. on add remove program it
won't even un-install.
I have HP 553x pavillion, windows xp.
1-I tried the cmd sasser worm removal commands, afer disconnecting phone
line, no help
2-Download latest , mydoom, zindos and doomjuice worm removal tool and it
found nothing.
3-Ran scan my computer with my Norton Antivirus -found nothing-2 advware
threats
4-ran adware-found 18 threats, quarenteened then deleted.
5-defragged system even though it didn't need it
6-emptied temp internet files and cookies.
That's all I can think of to help you figure this out, it's only after
computer has gotten warmed up, the fan is running.

So before I go to HP for online help, which usually is no help at all, I
knew I could come here. you have solved so many problems then had geeks
around here scratching their heads. Thanks for being here and I hope i typed
this is fast enough and i'm not locked out, if i am i can't even do a save
and copy thing.
Have a great evening

might help

use ms config .
start , run, type msconfig ,click startup ,and
uncheck this program from starting up . and then reboot ..
then you can manually search for it's files and delete the
folders or use add/remove.

Try a system restore. It has helped me get out of trouble heaps of times when
things like that happen.

Go to start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore
Restore it to a date before the problems happened and hopefully it will
begin to work again.

Actually, this does not sound like a software problem at all. It sounds
like your computer is overheating or there is some other hardware
failing. I would start by opening the case and running open, observing
all fans. Other hardware tests should be done on the power supply, RAM,
hard drives, etc. But I would definitely start with the overheating
possibility.

If the computer locks up after half an hour, but works fine up to that
point then I would suspect overheating as the primary culprit.

I am not certain if HP provides any sort of overheating alarms or
temperature monitoring software with their computers. You might
check your user documentation or with HP support about this.

If you can open the computer case then check inside for any buildup of
dust or fuzz and remove it with compressed air. You can buy cans of
compressed air for this purpose at any good computer or electronics
supply store and most of the big box outlets.

Also make sure that the CPU and power supply cooling fans are spinning
freely with no noise or vibration. If the computer is 3 years old or
older then you should replace the CPU cooling fan with a ball bearing
model that is specifically rated for your make, model and speed of
CPU. These fans are not expensive and they do not last forever.

Good luck
