I can't get rid of about:blank! alot of sites (including my email providers)
get redirected there. I've tried cwshredder, spyware doctor and adaware but
nothing works. I was thinking about hijackthis but heard you have to be
careful. Any thoughts on how to get rid of this annoying problem. thanks in

www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php you will be asked to install their Active X
content and it will run the program and grab things for you that shouldn't
be there.

Yes, you should run a combination of HijackThis and About:Buster, both
of which you can get from http://www.majorgeeks.com. However, you are
quite right to be cautious as those are expert tools. Here are links to
