About:Blank home page

B

Brrian

I had run into this problem a few months ago and was able
to correct it, but now since I've installed SP2 I can't
get rid of it!

I use AdAware, CWshredder, Spybot, Search & Destroy and
nothing is helping. I also have Norton Antivirus running
with the most up to date files. It keeps finding adware
DLL's but only after my home page is changed to
About:Blank again.

Any other suggestions?

What did you install? Your ad-killer must have done that to protect from
ad-ware changing your homepage.

Have you looked to see if you have a new folder added to your C:\ which you
don't recognise? It holds the stuff needed to keep this malware active.
Can't remember its name, tho.

I haven't added anything new as far as software goes
other then the updates files for the applications already
noted to help prevent this.

The only folder I see that I don't remember/recognize is
xerox. But it doesn't contain anything.

I had a problem with this about:blank hijack for ages. There's something on
your computer that reloads the files that you delete with other programs and
you're back to square one. Have you tried Hijackthis and then getting your
log file checked?

I have not tried this yet. Do you know where I can find
that?

A combination of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing
homepage hijackers. You should also use Ad-aware and Spybot Search &
Destroy. You can get all these programs free from
http://www.majorgeeks.com. Run removal tools in Safe Mode.

I've tried the about:buster and now I have a new issue.
This has seemed to reset my homepage to google.

Just can't seem to win with this one.....

This is standard behavior. Just set it to where you want it.
