adware

Nick

I seem to have some kind of adware that has taken over
my browser. It changes my home page, loads shortcuts on
my desk top, adds dozens of links to my favorites. Also,
it automatically opens IE to adult sites. I have tried
System Mechanic, McAfee, and Ad-aware. None of them seem
to be able to find the bug.

Nick,
You are getting some really bad advice in this string and some of it could
get you scads more viruses , adware, etc. Too bad the creeps have nothing
better to do than try and mess up as many people and computers as they can.
Hope you see this before you take any bad advice. By the way Ad-Aware is a
first class program, it just has a name that is similar to adware.
You'll notice I didn't give you any advice , except not to take bad advice
from creeps.

Hello Nick,

Word of warning, I read today that ad-aware from lavasoft can cause pop-ups
to appear and they apparently lay the blame on some spyware program,
sounds fishy to me. I would un-install ad-aware if I were you, until
they resolve their issues.

WHERE did you read that? Lavasoft is one of the most trusted names in online
security. Here is a page from a state university IS/IT department that
actually recommends installing and running it:

THEY are the experts...not you!

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

And ignore Gerry O.
