adware vs spybot

Yes, but I've recently decided the better combination of Spyware
detect/removal tools is Spybot 1.6 and MalwareBytes 1.30
*MalwareBytes free version

Be sure to use the Update feature of MalwareBytes before doing
a scan of your PC.

There is nothing specifically wrong with AdAware, but it's new
features and added bloat doesn't justify installing/using it.

is it safe to have both adaware and spybot SD both at the same time on XP
SP2 machine?

I used to be an advocate of AdAware *many* years ago but it's just
terrible now. Yes, you CAN have them both but AdAware secretly puts a
service that runs in the background and hogs 25-45MB of RAM for
NOTHING. Spybot doesn't. AdAware missed so many things that Spybot
finds. Ditch AdAware and keep Spybot. I converted to Spybot and have
never looked back.

I also found the same with AdAware. Was hogging about 50mb on this DC box.
Malwarebytes and Spybot do the job now

S&D is not compatable with my KIS so I had to remove it. I still use Spyware
blaster, although KIS does double duty for some of it's features, so I have
disable them in SPywareblaster. I'll have to check into malwarebytes see how
it works.

Interesting. AdAware 2008 (ver 7.1.0.11) *does* install a service that
runs all the time, but on my xp sp3 box, although aawservice.exe hits a
peak of over 170 MB during a scan, it drops down to around 500 KB once
Ad-Aware.exe is terminated. And the latter doesn't use more than about
10-15 MB while it's running.

Yes it is safe. But both programs have lost their lustre!

Consider these alternatives:
1. (real-time application)
WindowsDefender - Free
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
WD monitors the start-registry and hooks registers/files to prevent spyware
and worms to install to the OS.
Interesting reading:

"...Windows Defender did excel in behavior-based protection, which detects
changes to key areas of the system without having to know anything about
the actual threat."

2. (on-demand applications)
SuperAntispyware - Free

Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware - Free

Good luck :)

Not sure about the fate of Windows Defender, but One Care is
scheduled to be replaced by a new product "Morro" in the 2nd
half of 2009. According to news articles I've read it's a Malware
agent that Microsoft will provide free. No mention of what if any
validation/notification is required for use.

Spybot 1.6.1 is around the corner so hopefully it might work for you.
There is a beta of 1.6.1 floating around if you feel like testing it.

Hm, well, when I was using an earlier version of AdAware 7, it was
much more. Perhaps they've managed to put the service on a diet or
optimized it a bit. Still, it sucks to even have to need a service in
the background.
