I was wondering if anyone could tell me what product is
better? I have never been to this site before and I see
the anti spyware program. Is it better than
Spybot/Adaware? Does it detect adaware as well? Any help
is appreciated. Thank you.

This is a pretty good product, but it is in user testing
phase and it is not perfected yet.

This is called beta testing. Most people using this also
use both SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware SE Personal and other
programs.

These privatenews groups are for feedback and help in
developing the program.

Microsoft AntiSpyware (MSAS) is a very good program
especially for beginners. Most of us use all three
programs out of old habits as they all do things slightly
differently. The most important thing when using any of
these programs is to make sure they are always up to
date. MS AntiSpyware will update automatically while you
will need to manually update Spybot and Adaware. Spybot
can be configured to run in the background (behind the
scenes) but this is not easy to do for new users. I
highly recommend MSAS as it not only scans but runs
seamlessly in the background to provide active protection
with MS Security Center firewall. After installing MSAS
click Options then settings and confirm that AutoUpdater
and Real-time Protection are both fully enabled. In the
the Real-time settings window under Script-Blocking
Security Agent options select "Ask me what to do
(recommended). Be careful where you surf and scan at
least once a week if not daily by using the automatic
scan schedule by clicking "Manage Schedule" at the bottom
of the Spyware Scan page, just as you should be doing
with some type of anti-virus software. Be sure that you
also set Windows to auto update automatically or at least
to automatically check for updates and alert you when
updates are available. Also, if you are running any MS
Office products insure they are also kept up to date as
there are security threats associated with these programs
as well. Good luck and happy hunting.

Microsoft AntiSpyware for a beta 1 product is abosolutely great and yes, it
has a few kinks to work out in terms of performance and scheduling, but that
should be resolved by beta 2.

"Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect
Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known
spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative
effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up
ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your
private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety
by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

Participants in the worldwide SpyNetT community play a key role in
determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft
researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, and updates
are automatically downloaded to your PC so you stay up to date."

Hi,

I use the above two programs and this beta version all
together as well as a robust firewall. Having been the
victim of nasties in the past I take the view of the more
protection you can have the better.

NB - antispyware detected a trojan the other day where
the others didn't so I think it is worth having as well.

Good luck

Dave
