advice on how to replace amd socket 939 cpu

I have just bought a new athlon 64 3700+ san diego core (socket 939)
to replace an athlon 64 3200+. I am hoping that this cpu is going to
be significantly faster than my old one. I am using a not very good
asus a8n-vm socket 939 motherboard. I am looking for advice or guides
on how to remove and install a cpu as I have never done anything like
this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated ...

start with google, then search this group for relevant previous posts. I
stopped repeating myself several years ago, but a google groups search
will show posts by myself and others about cpu installation and
especially thermal compound application from a few years ago. Here're
several sites that might be useful, let us know:

Besides reading the 'How to' posts before doing the changeover take the time
to run your PC for 15 minutes to warm up the heatsink compound between the
cpu and the heatsink so that it's easier to remove.

Many thanks for your assistance for which I am very grateful. I have
now installed the athlon 64 3700+ and I was surprised at how easy it
was to install ... BUT I haven't applied any thermal paste as I don't
have any at the moment. When I took off the heatsink it was clear
that the thermal compound between the cpu and the heatsink had long
since evaporated. I am slightly concerned about frying my new cpu but
I have been running speedfan 4.31 program for a while and it is
showing a CPU temperature of 30 C and a core temperature of 29 C
(under conditions where the machine is left to idle). I am planning
to overclock anyway so would everyone agree that it is essential to
apply some thermal grease???

You'd be better off using some disk-brake bearing grease than running it
with nothing!
