Hello,
My Win XP sp2 machine is connected to the Internet via an adsl modem
which is connected to the computer through an nic (no integrated on
mainboard) in the computer.
My ISP is a faulty one. There are frequent instances of disconnection.
When the line is dropped my modem doesn't seem to recognise it. It
just keeps on behaving as if it is connected and causing loss of
valuable download time. So I use Patrick Poly's Adsl Autoconnect, a
programme that automates connection. This has an option to ping the
modem and dissconnect and reconnect after a few attempts.
I have set my PC IP ADDRESS as 192.168.1.2
Netmask as 255.255.255.0
Gateway as 192.168.1.1
as advised by the ISP.
If I want to disconnect and reconnect my modem when the line drops,
what value should I give against the option to ping the modem?
The following pics (screenshots of ADSL autoconnect preferences)
explain it.

Can somebody please advise me on it?
Thanks in advance.

You appear to have given the ADSL modem a fixed address
of 192.168.1.1. This is the address to ping.

I think you want to ping an address on the internet side to determine if
you have a connection. Why don't you try to ping www.google.com as this
will assure that you have connectivity to the DSL side of things.
