I tried installing the software for an ADSL modem but a message pop out
saying that it did not detect the ethernet adapter and quit installing. I
have already attached and link the modem to the adapter and network it is
connected and the adapter already being installed.
Thanks for any advise on how I could resolve the above.

By attaching the modem to the computer before installing the
software you have allowed WinXP to install its own drivers
etc for the device. Sometimes these work; sometimes they
don't.

What you need to do at this point is remove the hardware and
uninstall any software you may have installed for it. If
possible, roll back to a restore point that was made BEFORE
you attached the modem to the computer for the first time.
(Hopefully you have one...)

Install the software as directed and attach the modem only
when it tells you to.

I thaught that Ethernet based ADSL modems do not need ant Windows drivers?
All is needed is a standard Ethernet based network card.

As for USB DSL modems, always install the software/drivers before connecting
it.

Read the docs on how to install your new hardware. Dont just plug it in
and cross your fingers and hope for the best.
