Can anyone tell me (simply) how to connect my 2000Pro to ADSL Internet
by either:-
1. USB2 Netgear Ethernet connector
2. 3ComNIC.
Reason is 2000Pro only sets up connections for dial-up accounts on my
machine. Bigpond ADSL setup CD program hangs after failing to find
modem.(ten times at least so far).Tried to instal RASPPPOE via
OzCableGuys site but this setup an ISDN dialup connection- not quite
what I wanted. My XP Pro machine(un networked)works perfectly thru
NIC.
Any assistance appreciated.

RASPPPoE should handle Ethernet to ADSL connection, as "PPPoE" means
"Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet"... I've been using it for the
purpose you described for quite a while. You can refer to the installation
FAQ, it's quite simple.

On the other hand, you can find more information at http://www.raspppoe.com,
instead of elsewhere. I like unaltered package from direct manufacturer.

The *best* way to go is with a DSL/Cable Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41.

If your ISP uses PPPoE (such as Verizon, my ISP) then the Router, not the PC will make the
DSL connection. The Router would have the MTU value of 1492, not the PC. The PC would use
a standard MTU value of 1500.

There are many advantages to using a cable/DSL router such as, but not limited to...

DHCP server to supply addresses to LAN node
allows sharing up to 253 LAN nodes.
4 port 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet switch
NAT which acts as a simplistic fireWall or a full FireWall depending on vendor/model of
cable/DSL Router
relieves all LAN nodes of using *any* special or ISP software

Dave,
Thanks muchly. The problem is not the connection but the fact that the
2000Pro wizard only admits to dial-up accounts. The XP wizard for
example is far more liberal with choice of accounts and allows DSL.
How can I convince 2000Pro to allow DSL connections. Am I the only one
in the world with 2000Pro and ADSL?
Ross

You don't get it.

Once you are behind the Router, you are just another Ethernet LAN node. There is NO wizard,
no Dial-Up. I practice what I preach. I am an a Win2K Professional workstation right now
and I'm behind a Linksys BEFSR81 DSL/Cable Router.

Dave, thanks again. I do not possessa router as I only want to connect
one machine to the internet. If necessary I will purchase one but it
seems to me to be going to extremes to just connect a single machine
to the net.

Since it acts as a FULL or SIMPLISTIC FireWall -- NO.

It will protect you from the Lovsan/Blaster, Sasser, Bugbear and other Internet worms as
well as hackers.

Dave,
I may be labouring the point but my problem is configuring the
COMPUTER part to allow internet connection. I have a live RJ45 plug
(ADSL) removed from my XP machine and want to be able to plug it into
my 2000 machine and access the net. My 2000 machine will only allow
DIAL-UP connections. Put simply, what must I do?
Ross
p.s. this has stumped another group so I feel as though I am the only
one in the world who wants to use 2000Pro with ADSL.

I gave you the answer. You seem to have a mental road block and just don't get it.

If you apply my suggestion your question becomes a moot point.

I shall not reply to this thread again.
