Adobe Acrobat & IE 6

R

Rick Myers

When I'm looking at a page in Adobe Acrobat or Reader
(both v 6), when I close the page, IE6 also closes and
restarts. I can't find anything on either site as to a
fix. Any ideas?

Gracie

I've been having a similar problem and Jan has been
helping me work through it along with the guys at
auhma.org. Ended up talking to Adobe tech support and
they said it's not Adobe, it's IE. If you want the long
boring details... see my post on June 21 sometime between
7 AM and 11 AM... I think it is on page 40-something by
now.

Ok, at one point I'll have a gander at it. Meanwhile, just to cut to the
chase, has it been resolved? Whether it's Adobe or IE, something has gotten
corrupted or is in conflict, otherwise it *should* work. Running IE6 with
*all* patches, updates, blah-blah and Abobe Reader (AcroRd32.exe) ver.
6.0.0.2003051900 and it works fine. Haven't done the latest update for it
which Adobe keeps pestering me about. I have no need for that updated
feature.

I don't know what the actual situation is with yours yet. But after all
methods of trying to repair, remedy, "patch up" by round-about means, I'd
select to un-install and re-install it. A very handy tool which I will not
live without is Total Uninstall. I install and remove *No program* without
it. It shows all changes made in the Registry, and every other place one
would wish to selectively scan. Then if there are dribs and drabs which are
not removed, one can seek them out, determine if it is detrimental to remove
or safe to remove. (Like shared .dll's for instance) Then it is clean.

Also, there is the very good idea of a clean-boot for all very complex
removals and installations. Mostly to aid the process by eliminating any
process that may be running in the background and would therefore not permit
the file to be updated, altered, or removed as it is in use at that time.
Clean-Boot eliminates that probability.

It isn't resolved yet, so I am doing the happy dance that
you're willing to offer some insight.

Btw... I just got a post from someone following the
thread at the Adobe forum and he said he pinpointed it to
the MSN toolbar. As soon as he removed the toolbar, the
problem was fixed. Problem with that is that I don't have
the MSN toolbar. Drat.

I am printing your instructions and as soon as I can, I
am going to continue to troubleshoot. It could be a while
before I get to it... I just got a boatload of contracts
dumped on my head for work that needs done by the end of
July so looks like its workaround city for me for at
least the near future. I'll keep the date/time of this
post though and let you know how things work out for me.

Thanks..

Hey Lucky.....
Two things... first a question... I went back to my
original thread and posted something to Jan. The thread
started on June 21... will he see it? I haven't heard
from him so I figured he is out for a day or three. Just
wondering.

Other thing... In reading some other posts, I decided to
go out and get Mozilla and guess what?!?! No more pdf
problems. What's up with that? I have tons and tons of
hard drive so it doesn't matter to me to have two
browsers, but it kills me that I've spent hours and hours
trying to get to the bottom of this just to find out that
all I had to do is cross the street.

Arrrgghh!

Hi ;-)

Yes, I think Jan (do you mean Jan II?) will see it. She's a pretty sharp
cookie <vbs>, and if she uses Ctrl-H she'll see all posts which have been
submitted in which she has replied. I believe you are referring to the
"Runtime errors" post are you not?

I'll mention it if she doesn't see your plea.

Heh... many use more than one browser, such as Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, etc.
I just didn't want to recommend to install another browser and sidestep the
IE issue. Again, it works for me with just about every instance I can think
of. But I can understand the frustration of just "buying the newspaper from
a different less cantankerous fellow across the road", and how easy a fix
that was, instead of an annoying encounter everyday. Y'know what I mean?
<bg>

What's up with that? Well, I'm not sure with your XP setup, IE6, and Adobe,
as I only run 2 out of those 3, and it works for me. But you know, some
things are best just living with rather than wracking ones' brain trying to
figure out. This happens in every field of endeavor... and it's best to just
move on. ;-))

I trust all is well now, and that you'll be able to use your PC with endless
joy. <s>

Regards,

Yep... I mean Jan II. She is a sharp cookie alright.
There seem to be a lot of sharp cookies on this forum
(don't let your head fill up the room... lol).

I do want the IE thing resolved... mainly because, could
be there're a lot of things out there that are good or
better but it's what I'm used to. So when I have time,
I'll work through the things you suggested.

Thanks for your help!!

You are probably right about how you feel regarding your comfort level with
IE. That's understandable. You might grow accustomed (given time) with
Mozilla though.

We'll see if some other new developments come to light and if I see a post
and solution offered elsewhere. But for now, I'm at the end of my resources.
When time permits, try that which I suggested and come back with your
results.

Yes, Jan is a very helpful person; seems to put quite a bit of herself into
helping and in a personable way. <s>

BTW, you probably know this (?), but we who frequent these NG's are
scattered the world over, and aren't contained in a room. If we were, it
would have to be the worlds largest lunatic asylum! "We" are mostly users of
PC's just like you. But there are a goodly number of MVP's and MSFT
personnel who also apply their considerable talents to helping people. It's
all strictly volunteers one way or another.

Regards to you Gracie. <s>

I don't have the MSN toolbar.

What other BHO do you have?
Have you tried disabling all of them (as a test)?

<title>KB298931 - How to Disable Third-Party Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects</title>

FYI this used to be a workaround for similar problems with older versions
of Acrobat Reader. Perhaps they have regressed whatever the fix was.

BTW what version of AcroIEHelper.dll and pdf.ocx do you have?
And where are they located? When you uninstalled your Acrobat
did you reinstall your Acrobat Reader? FWIW after updating
XPsp2RC1 to XPsp2RC2 I recently discovered that AR's mechanisms
(e.g. Ctrl-k Internet Preferences and prompts) evidently give a false
impression of being sufficient to change the registry. I even tried manually
re-registering those two program extensions I mentioned but even that
was not enough to get it working properly again. The final solution was
to use AR's Repair feature (entered via the Add/Remove Change button)
to (apparently) simulate a complete reinstall of AR6.0 .

Try un-installing and re-installing Adobe Reader (and
Acrobat). Perhaps
something's become corrupted. I assume it is due to
Adobe, as you do not
mention any other apps causing this.
