When trying to update XP from the Microsoft site, I get
the Adminstrators required message, even though "I am the
Administrator. Acessing the adminstrator field from the
programs field as suggested did not help either.

Hi,

This is a common occurence when a third party firewall is running as well as
the native one, try disabling one or both before accessing the update site.
There are a few other possible causes as well, please see:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
