My son has given me his laptop with windowsxp installed and I have
successfully installed my own data etc; however I have a problem with
removing his name and some of his data.
I am now logged as the administrator and/or only user but I still find that
there is a file called "C:\Documents and Settings\my son's name\Local
Settings\Application Data\\MigWiz" and also "C:\Documents and Settings\my
son's name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer".
I want to change these from my son's name to my name but changing the
administator has not done this. I do not see why there should be anything
in the C drive with my son's name.
There are other files but these will gibe an example.
Can anyone help me clear this up?
If I am in the wrong newsgroup please excuse and maybe redirect me.
Thank you.

Create your own user.
Once you have everything on the new user - it setup looking like you wish
and with all the files you want and such - remove your son's account.

In general - if you get an used machine - it's best to start from sctratch
so *you* know everything that is on there.

Shenan, thank you for the reply but while I have set up myself as
administrator and user by replacing my son's name with mine I still find
that there are some files and folders in his name ( such as I mentioned). I
cannot see how I can delete his name when he is no longer an administrator
or user.
Do you know how?
Thank you.

I have now managed to rename quite a lot of the files into my name but there
are still some that the computer baulks at.
Those called "application" or "Application Data" just will not shift.

that is not how it works :)

You need to create a NEW user, not rename the old user.

While you can rename a user account, it will always still use the old userID in anything it has already created, like the path in documents and settings.

Make a new user with your name
log in as Administrator and open system properties > Advanced > User Profiles section [Settings] button

Then highlight the profile with your sons name and copy it over the profile with your name on it.

But, like someone else said, you are much better off starting with your own clean profile, not using hos or copying his.

In general - if you get an used machine - it's best to start from

Again - CREATE your own accont.

There is no renaming... You create a whole NEW user account under your name.

You can rename the computer and you can change the name under which a
product like Office is registered (not that any of that matters in the
scheme of things) - but for a user account - create a WHOLE NEW ACCOUNT,
copy any files you need from your son's account (now renamed) to yours under
C:\Documents and Setting\username and then go into the same place you
created your account when logged in as your sons old account and delete your
son's account.

http://windows.about.com/od/useraccounts/ht/createuser.htm

In your case - at least at first - the new account will have to be an
administrator so you can use it (after you move everything you need from
your son's account and reboot and log back into your new account again) to
erase your sons old account.

Thanks both, I shall try to-morrow as it is now 2234 here in Scotland and
the laptop in question is not switched on. My own desktop computer (I am
using it just now) uses windows 2000 and I must say that I find it easier to
work with.

Hi Stewart
Have you tried to delete these in safemode?
