Administrator Password

If I am the only person using the computer is it necessary to set an
administrator password when installing XP?

You don't have to but if you don't anyone in the world can get access to
your system because everyone in the world that runs XP know "Administrator"
is a valid name to gain access to any XP machine and they could guess you
left the password empty and try it.

So, don't do it and see what kind of problems you get. Then come back and
