I have a Dell, running Windows XP Home. I messed up my
system file and needed to go back to previously saved
recovery point. I couldn't launch windows so tried going
in through the recovery console. I was able to log into
the recovery console this a.m.

Following Dell technical support instructions I've
created an enless loop whereby if I boot off the hard
drive I can't get past the Windows log-in screen as it's
asking for authentication then logs out and back to the
log-in screen - an endless loop. Also following Dell
technical support instructions, I've copied the system
file from the Repair directory over the top of my broken
system file in my config directory. Now, I can't get
into the recovery console because my Administrator
Password is no longer valid! (The password has always
been blank, by the way. AFTER the deadly copy, I find a
Microsoft bulletin that says, "don't do this if you have
an OEM installed operating system; you may not be able to
log into the recovery console again." An the OEM was the
one who sent me the instructions!)

Dell technical support now says I have to reinstall
Windows. If I don't have to, I don't want to. I don't
want to loose my data, as tech support implies I will -
not config information, but data files data.

Is there REALLY no work-around to get past the
Administrator Password?
