I just upgraded to xp from 98se. I tried to uninstall
Nortor Anti-virus (so I could re-install it) and it
doesn't seem as though the \Documents and Settings\ dir
can be written to. It looks as though I can change the
write permissions but it always reverts to write-
protected. I'm the only user, which I think makes me the
admin. What's up? How can I get write permission to
uninstall/install this software?

You should have uninstalled it prior to installing XP .
Uninstall XP and then uninstall Norton's. You should also have run the
upgrade wizard to see what should be uninstalled before upgrading
Go to add remove you should see a removal for XP to go back to 98

Yes, I understand that, but as administrator I think I
should be able to make the folders writeable. Why can't I
do that?

I think this is a case where where the reserve, emergency account
called Administrator comes in. Boot, hitting F8 as BIOS info goes to
black; take Safe Mode, There will then be an icon for Administrator on
the Welcome screen. (If not, hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice and enter the
explicit name
Administrator
and leave the password blank)

From it you should be able to modify permissions on any folder if the
drive is NTFS (r-click - Properties - Security, maybe going on to
Advanced and Ownership).

But I think you will find the Norton Install will run. They seem to
have gone OTT and want the explicit Administrator name, not just any old
administrator
