Administrator account (user) in WinXP

George

The Administrator user has disappeared from the login
screeen & User Accounts tab of the Control Panel but it
still exists under Administrative Tools/Computer
Management/Local Users and Groups/Users in Control Panel
and is not inactivated. I need to be able to login to the
old Administrator account to export OE files to a new
login on the same machine. The OE import wizard will not
recognize the old files in the store. Any help in getting
the default Administrator login back is appreciated. TNX

For XP Pro, press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome screen with no other user logged on. You'll get the old Win2K style logon. Alternatively, To enable the Administrator account on the new Windows XP logon screen, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ......

This small VB Script will make the registry change necessary for the Administrator account to be available on the Welcome Screen.

For XP Home, you can only access the built in Administrator account in Safe Mode.

Additionally, See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"

Greetings --

The built-in Administrator account really isn't intended to be
used for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to
set a strong password on it and use it only to create another account
for regular use, reserving the Administrator account as a "back door"
in case something corrupts your regular account(s).

As you've learned, once any additional user accounts have been
created, the Administrator account will no longer be displayed on the
Welcome Screen. This is a default security feature. By design, the
only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to
reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at
the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

I have the same problem as George did, but I'm using
WinXP Home Edition. I've booted in safe mode, but the
welcome screen still defaults to "guest." Is there a
handy "Ctrl+Alt+Del" fix for Home Edition?

then you should be able to reenable it since it can only be disabled/enabled
by another administrator
