The Administrator account was deleted. Is there a way to add it back,
without being an administrator?

Or do I/(can I?) have to do a re-install of XP?

Thx

Restart in Safe Mode (when BIOS screen turns black hit F8 and choose that option), and login using an account named "Adminstrator". Then create a new administrator account.

OR ... Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE twice. This will bring up a login box
(Win2000 like). From here you can enter the user name "Administrator"
without the quotes and no password. This will work unless you secured
your administrator account with a password in which case you should
enter the password, if you remember it. If you don't remember the
password, you are hosed!

Thanks for the quick response - However, what my message said was that "The
Administrator account was deleted".

Don't know who or what they did, but they deleted the Administrator and left
another account with Limited Type.

Now I need to add back the Administrator account.

I do not see the Administrator account when starting up or when forcing the
logon i.e. Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE twice

XP will *not* allow you to delete the *only* administrator account.
There must be another account. Booting into safe mode will show *all*
administrator accounts. Also, if you have TweakUI installed you can see
all the account names. There is a section that lets you *hide* logons
from the user selection screen. From this window you should be able to
see all accounts and maybe one of them will be an administrator account
that you did not know about. I hope this helps.

The built-in Administrator account *cannot* be deleted. What is your
specific problem?

FYI

This is what I am up against and trying to figure out what to do to
re-construct.

How to Disable the Local Administrator Account on Windows XP
Note Before you disable the local Administrator account, make sure that
there is at least one other local or network user who can gain access to the
computer with administrator permissions. Otherwise, you will not be able to
reverse this action in the future. 1. Log on as Administrator, or as a user
with administrator permissions.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
3. In the left pane, expand the Local Users and Groups node, and then
click Users.
4. In the right pane, double-click the Administrator account.
5. On the General tab, select the Account is disabled check box, and
then click OK.
6. Quit the Computer Management console. The new setting take effect
the next time you attempt to log on to this computer.

I wouldn't think XP would allow you to block access to the
*administrator* account. So there are only Limited Users still able to
LogOn? Who was *they* that blocked the account and why were *they*
administering your computer?

Unless someone else has any other ideas (and correct me if I am wrong) ...
(1)I know you said it is disabled, but did you try the CTRL-ALT-DELETE
login? Make sure to *type* Administrator into the user name box, there
may not be a choice to select.

(2)You should be able to install over your current installation and your
files should be intact if not your settings.

Your asking the million dollar question re "They and why"??

This is what happens when someone insist that they want their users to have
Administrator type accounts and they (trusted employees!) pass out the
password to someone else.

The someone else - we do not know and as always "I did not do that!"

So I'm left with the problem to fix.

From what I can see they made both changes at the same time, before
re-booting - deleting the Administrator and changing the type of account to
Limited.

Cute huh!

thx

Guess I'll have to just backup and do a new install.

Sorry to hear the bad news. I hope the reinstall goes well.
