Address list

Does anyone have a suggestion for an address maintenance software program?
I'm looking for a program that you can enter Name, Address, Phone, and etc.
I also need the ability to print the names (alphabetically) on a 8 1/2 x 11
sheet of paper.
It seems simple but Word, WordPerfect, and Works don't seem to have the
answer and OpenOffice's database has a pretty high learning curve. I used
Access a few years ago but the was a huge learning curve and I'm just
looking for a preformed output and simple input type program.

Jake leapt out of the bath and screamed "EUREKA!" before typing in

Not exactly what you probably wanted, but I remember that Access97
came with a little address database that I still use today to print
mailing labels. (I just added a new report to it)

You could have a look at that, or I'd be happy to post my copy of it
into a binary group, if you wish?

I use Oubliette (http://www.tranglos.com/free/oubliette.html) myself
for on the fly address storing, although it won't really do what you
want, given it's really a Password manager, but it just crossed my
mind too.

I looked for just such an app about a year ago and tried out several of
them. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any freeware that did
everything that I wanted. The main problem, as I recall, was finding one
that would allow me to print out a hard copy of all the information,
with the names in alphabetical order and their related data given with
the name in an orderly fashion.

A template for WordPerfect would fit the bill. This turning into a major
project!
Thanks for the leads and keep them coming. It sure seems like a simple
project gone amok :-)

hmm. . . Treepad (or Keynote) might fill the bill. Each name below is a
node - address information is in the "note". Sort alphabetically as
needed (new names, name changes), export to a text file and print. I did
a small test. Exported Treepad output looks like this:

Allcott, Jo

519 Prospect St.
Anywhere, IA 57965
phone: 123 456-7890

Jones, Sally

Thanks, Susan. I looked over the writeup at the Treepad website and
agree that Treepad may be just what Jake needs. In my case, however, I
was looking for something to serve my parents' needs, and I'm now
remembering that they really needed more of a database-type app with
several fields for names, addresses, phone numbers, names of siblings,
etc, etc, plus the ability to add custom fields, like whether or not
they sent the person a Christmas card last year. As I recall, I went
through several that you and others recommended at the time, and I found
one or two (I forget the names) that would allow the necessary fields to
be set up reasonably well, but then they ended up surprisingly unable to
print out all the information in an organized and coherent fashion.

I too downloaded it but is lacks the control of printing that I need. I
looked for WordPerfect and Word templates but no joy! This can't be that
complicated, can it?
I may have to open Word and re-learn page layout to create what I
need....UGH.
Thanks all.

This is useful. It saves data in three mdb files. You should be able to
manipulate the data to your own needs.

If you have MS Office (sorry if anyone is offended, but if you have it, why
not use it?) why not use the Spread Sheet? Many people I know use
SS for text rather than mathematical calculations because they find it
easier to use than Access. Just a thought.

Good point Helen - Excel can very easily be used as a light-weight
database. You can even mailmerge data into Word for better print
formatting.

FWIW - I use a spreadsheet for addresses and much of the other info you
listed. PROS: that allows me to extract and print just a portion of the
info. IOW I can create many different printouts (different lists of
names, different info) CONS: A spreadsheet is NOT a good place to store
miscellaneous notes and tidbits of information. A spreadsheet is a bit
of a PITA when you're doing data entry. There's a fairly high learning
curve - especially if you want to get the most out of it. . .

OTOH. . .

Treepad is very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very ;) easy to
learn/use and it's very flexible. PROS: Data entry is easy. You don't
need custom fields, you simply add whatever info you want to add where
you want to add it. Rearranging the info in a note is easy. Finding
information is incredibly easy. CONS: some data manipulations are
possible/easier in a spreadsheet than in Treepad. Sorting and printing
options are more limited in Treepad (in comparison to a spreadsheet).

IMO Treepad is the better choice for most people/ most types of data
organization. KISS! :) Since I sent the earlier post I've been toying
with the idea of dumping my "addresses" spreadsheet into Treepad. . .
that would be super easy to do (alas, it is not so easy to go in the
other direction). I think it would be easier to maintain in Treepad - I
might be able to use separate subtrees for the various groups of people/
businesses. Still weighing the pros and cons. . .

Thanks for the comparative analysis, Susan. Between the two, I suspect
that a spreadsheet would suit my parents' desires best, but not
perfectly. Unfortunately, they got used to keeping this info in an
expensive program called PowerChurch (church software) and would like
something free or cheap that will do the same thing for their personal
data . . .

Have you tried Keynote? It works just like treepad

IIRC I gave it up in favour of treepadlite because it was *too* fully
featured.

I'm pretty sure it would print better (not a feature I wanted)

I hope my memory's not at fault!

I's what I do, Susan, and it's excellent;

I keep subdividing parts of my information with child nodes ad nauseam.

It looks fraught, but the search funtion instantly navigates to where I
want to be.

I took a quick glance at PowerChurch's membership features:

made me wonder if a family tree program might be useful. . .

This might be overkill, but Time & Chaos is a nice piece of software,
with numerous printing options for the address book.
