When I type in a contacts name, I am presented several choices of addresses
including those that are obsolete and which have been deleted from my
address book. How can I prevent this from happening and be rid of the deleted
addresses permanently.

Windows Mail saves a list of the last 29 recipients you've sent email to.
There is no easy way to delete an undesired email address from that list.
The list is stored in the registry.

Be patient. Eventually that bad address will drop off the remembered list.
