Address Book Problems

Can a person use both Outlook and Outlook Express, on the same computer, for different applications? I need this ability for two different situations, but am having trouble with the address books' switching names back and forth between them and losing the entries when it happens. Is there any way to resolve the conflict and keep the proper Business contacts in the Outlook and the Personals in Outlook Express?

Absolutely.

It seems that with Outlook 98 or 2000 in Internet Mode Only, you can share
the Windows Address Book (the book OE uses) between OL and OE. With any
other version of OL or OL 98 or 2000 in Corporate/Workgroup Mode, that
option doesn't exist. Your best bet is to use the Windows Address Book as
the master and when you update it, import it into Outlook. (File>Import and
Export>Import Mail and Addresses, select Outlook Express and uncheck all but
the "Import Address Book" box.)

Hmm... maybe I'm not being clear

I want to keep OE as my default with all my personal addresses in it. Then, I want to use OL as a "business" entity and keep the contacts "business" (different). I have no desire to interchange them or have them in both... in fact, the business ones will come and go, due to their volume whereas the personals should remain. It seemed to work fine (for one day... yesterday) until today, when it started duplicating whichever one I changed/re-imported from my backup file. It now posts the same address book contents to both... regardless of which one I fix/change

Obviously, you are using IMO mode. It is possible for OE to use Outlook as
its Contacts store if you've enabled sharing in the Windows Address Book
(Tools > Sharing). Disable that option if you want to keep them separate.

After rereading what you wrote, I find you were clear and I misinterpreted
what you wrote.

So, what version of Outlook are you using and, if applicable, what mode?

I thought the problem was fixed (after following your instruction) but am now having/experienccing continued problems. I am using Office/OL 2000 and OE 6.

The OE addresses stay there and the OL contacts stay there.

However, when I try and add a "vcf" file into the Outlook "contacts"... it ends up in the OE address book.

I have checked the box (in OE address book) to prohibit "sharring", but that hasn't fixed it.

It is making life quite difficult for me (and my new job)!

So, convert Outlook to "Corporate/Workgroup Mode" and all sharing between
the Contacts folder in Outlook and the Windows Address Book will vanish.

No, you don't have to change modes. This has nothing to do with the address
book sharing option.
You just need to change the open verb for VCF files from OE to Outlook in
File Associations.

Russ:

In checking in my "File Associations (Win XP Home) I find that "Outlook" is the association for vcf file types. Is that what you're asking/suggesting?

You have some setting somewhere that is invoking the WAB, then.
If correctly associated, VCF files will open in Outlook. There have been
some problems getting it to save to the Contacts Folder, however.

Well, Russ gave you the definitive answer back on June 9, it would seem.
Sorry my suggestion didn't pan out.
