Address bar won't search and search companion unable to connect

I have a problem with searching from my address bar.
IF I type "test" I get http:///? test and a page cannot be displayed
error.

I also can't get my search companion to do internet searches. It gives me a
unable to connect error.

I have talked to MS tech support, but the guy on the phone knew less about
his computer than me.

I have gone into the registry and made sure things were good, but it still
doesn't work.

Please someone help me.

XP sp2 I have run spybot and adware to clean things up and Norton antivirus
2005 is running. The computer is clean, but my internet explorer search
functions wont' work.

Oh, I also have uninstalled and reinstalled IE 6 using control panel and
that didn't work either.

URGHHH!! Maybe I should switch to that firefox thingyi.

Is there a way to do this without having to switch to a different browser in
the end...I am presenting a challenge...reply to this one.
