Address bar unusable

When I use IE6 and right click on a link and then select "open in new window" the address bar in the new window fills up with graphics from a portion of the new page that opens and I can not type anything in the address bar. This also occurs if the window pops up automatically when a link is clicked on. The original IE6 window address bar remains fine. Also if I open multiple IE6 windows from the desktop shortcut the address bar in those windows works normally. The problem only seems to occur when a new window is open from a link. I am running Windows 98 Second edition. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated
Thank you.

Rule out parasites.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

Henri,

I followed all your recommendations and IE6 address bar
seems to be functioning normally now. Thanks for the
useful help. One more question though. It seems I had
the spyware, parasites, etc. you mentioned. Would it have
been possible for those programs to send out my passwords
I entered while on secure websites? Do you think it would
be necessary to change my passwords?

Once again thanks for the help you provided.

Mark
