Address bar not working

I seem to have a problem with my internet explorer. I can load up to
my home page, but whenever I try to type in an address into the address
bar, my explorer does nothing. It sits and sits thinking and not
actually loading the page I want. I have done a trace route to the
site, which was www.google.com, and see that I can connect to it just
fine. The only way I can search the net is through my yahoo search
engine, because yahoo is my homepage. Any help with this problem would
be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If running Windows XP and IE6, these problems are probably being caused by
the MS06-015 Update (Released April 11.) Usually (for example) www.yahoo.com
won't work but http://www.yahoo.com will connect. Clicking on a Favorite
will work.

If you have HPs Share to Web software installed, download and run the VBS
file "HP's Share-to-Web software - Fix " at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 383.

If Share to Web is not installed, that fix doesn't work, or simply to read
more, see:
http://www.aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=19125

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,
Great Job! I've spent all afternoon trying to figure out why I couldn't just
type yahoo.com or whatever. Your link to kellys-korner line 383 was perfect
and fixed my problem in about 2 seconds.
Thank you,
Kevin

There is a problem with a Windows Update download and I could not use the
address bar either or open and save files in any application. I went to
add/remove programmes and deleted my HP scanner and everything now works!!!!
Do you have any HP scanners or things on your computer. Luckily we do not
use scanner as have a new printer/scanner and would rather have everything
else working?

The Kelly's Corner script worked to fix the problem with multiple user
accounts as well. For whatever reason, the regedit fix in the KB article
would only fix the problem in the user account I was logged into when I
performed the fix. Thanks!

I have been having the same difficulty all week! I've scanned, defragged,
virus-scanned - all to no avail. I came across a post ascribing the
difficulty to Windows Update KB908531, installed on 4/18/2006. I followed
the suggestion to remove it via the "add/remove" function, and like magic,
everything is back to normal. What a relief. I suppose Microsoft will
release a new update on that one!

MaryKarenK,
Before you get too euphoric about MS fixing anything, understand that MS is
not going to fix what they consider to be HP's issue. As fast as you
uninstal KB908531, autoupdate will reinstall it. You can shut down
autoupdate, but then you will not get updates that you do need. Apparently
KB908531 is an important security update that you should not be without. So
the best solution is to "fix" the HP-supplied combination of ingredients that
conflict with KB908531.

I could not get the manual editing of the registry that is quoted in some
posts to work for me. Plus, I am not very comfortable molesting the registry
with regedit. BUT what DID work for me was using the downloaded HP
Share-to-Web fix from the Kellys Corner website. The link is given in Don
Varnau's excellent contribution, as well as several responses from MS MVP's.

Check out that download solution. If it works for you, it is the best
because it allows you to leave KB908531 in place and allows autoupdate to
continue doing its job.

And thanks to Don Varnau for his knowledgable and helpful post.

Good Luck

Thanks to the Don Varnau response, mine now works perfectly. I was worried
about uploading the fix as my security device said it was 'malicious' but I
think thats a precaution for something that makes material changes to a
programme - anyway, for those of you still worried - it's definitely NOT a
malicious fix! Honestly.
