Additional Hard Drive Witch?

I have a new computer, running XP professional, that came with a 250GB SATA
hard drive.. I installed a 2d hard drive, IDE, 250GB, went to the process in
the system hardware to partition and format the new drive. Windows assigned
the new drive letters as K and L which meant I had C as the original, K and
L being the new IDE. That part was flawless.. 3 days later, F drive pops up?
I checked it out in the system and it is valid but has the same serial
number as K. Every time booted the computer the computer, it had to check F
drive and make corrections. Nothing was ever stored on K drive or this
phantom F drive for that matter. So I backed up L drive to C drive, then
formatted F drive. Now all that is left of the IDE drive is F. K and L have
disappeared?
What happened??
The other problem is , when I restored the back up files to the alternate
location , C drive , they restored but none of the programs work and some
will not allow me to reinstall because the message "program already
installed on L", but then it also says "L ,Major error.."
Any help, suggestions, or directions to links that will cover this
problem???

Thanks

If the new partitions were asigned letters begining with K & L,then youre
original
hd must have 6 to 8 partitions (volumes) on it....Whats with all the
partitions...
Try limiting each hd to the normal 2 or 3 max, you'll get less headaches from
the mess youre getting yourself into......Youre also putting backup data on
C:
Having C: as the hd with the OS on it,cant function very well as a backup..

It is a new computer, dual core AMD, has the card readers installed which
take up some of the drive letters,a 700mb Zip and a 2d optical drive
dvd-rom. I only backed up my L drive to C when things started acting
funny.C contains all of the original programs . No other partition on C.
Only partition was the new IDE drive which contained K and L as designated
by Windows.
I was doing some thinking on this problem and I figure somewhere in my
registry, there are these L references? I probably need a suggestion for a
program to clean it out so I can reinstall my original programs from L to
get them to work again on C.

Your recovered apps will not run, because of the drive designations, in the
registry, from when they were origonally installed.

I cannot answer as to why you appear to have phantom drives, but failing any
other responses I think I would be tempted to disconnect the ide drives,
together with the card reader and zip, leaving only your origonal C and a
floppy and single cd, then run a repair installation of winxp, then connect
the ide drives & prepare them before finally connecting the other devices.
