Adding Win2k Network Place for FTP access

R

Rick C.

Can someone help me set up a Network Place in Win2k Explorer to FTP
files with my web space? It's for a new FTP account 'newuser' that I
created.

In the Add Network Place Wizard, at 'Type the Location of the Network
Place' I enter ftp://ftp.mywebname.net/ and click Next. At the next
screen I enter 'newuser' as my user name. At the final box I enter a
name for the Network Place and click Finish which brings up the Login As
dialog. I enter '(e-mail address removed)' as User Name and 'password' as
Password and click Login. It opens up a Microsoft Internet Explorer
window with ftp://[email protected]/ in the Address Bar but with
no files showing, and I know I have files there.

If I click Refresh, it just brings up the Login As dialog again.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Using a regular FTP client I can
connect via user '(e-mail address removed)' with no problem.

Yes. Pretty much the whole entire approach. "Network Places" doesn't have
anything to do with FTP.

That is how you are supposed to do it.

OK, thanks. Yet I've created a Network Place to connect to the FTP site
on my own web page. It works perfectly, and allows me to copy files
between my web site and my own PC via Windows Explorer. Isn't this FTP?
I guess I'm confused. Thanks for any help.

I have never even dreamed of using Network Places in such a way, so I don't
know what it is doing behind the scenes, but it is very possible that it is
not FTP. FTP is a very specific protocol and requires specifically an FTP
Client Application to use it. IE can function as an FTP Client but it is
very limited and IE is pretty much a lousy FTP Client.

In the Add Network Place Wizard in Windows Explorer, the first prompt is
'Type the Location of the Network Place' beneath which there's a link
'Here are some examples'. Clicking on this link, one of the examples
given for possible Network Places is 'ftp://ftp.microsoft (FTP site)'.

In any case, I believe you and I'm willing to consider that I was only
able to get it working under some very specific circumstances (that will
probably remain unknown to me!) -- and that don't exist now as I'm
trying to create this *new* Network Place for this new FTP account.

I have no experience using IE as an FTP client, but only Windows
Explorer.

OK, well, I don't know anything about that, I've never messed with that. I
have never considered the Network Places to ever be a solution for anything.
