Adding security to shared folder???

Someone told me that a "$" sign could be appended to a folder name and that
would make it not show up in my network or people browsing for the folder.
However, it could still be mapped or UNC and show up.

Is that true??

I'm at home and can't check it out and won't be back until Monday.
