Adding scanned documents to Word 2003?

First, if anyone knows of an efficient way to do this, please advise.

I have 30 pages I need to scan into Word 2003 and then make a pdf file from
them. I have 300 pages total, but only 30 at a time.

I am using an HP 5470c scanner and when I insert the scanned document using
the insert command from Word, it seems to work OK. But if I change the
margins in Page Setup, to make the image closer to actual size, the image
gets much larger and parts are cut off, and cannot be recovered by resizing
the image.

If I choose "Insert" picture from scanner, I have a choice of the scanner or
the HP utility. If I choose the scanner, the entire glass is not scanned
and some information at the bottom is lost. If I choose the HP utility, I
can control what is scanned, but the utility shuts down and the next page,
the settings have to be re-entered. If I leave the HP utility open and use
the "send to" option, it will only be inserted into the first page, and not
where the cursor is located (this is a big problem). I have tried a
CTRL-ENTER to create a new page, but it still goes to the first page.

So, some specific questions:
Is there a way to make Word scan the entire page?
Is there a way to get the HP utility to "send to" Word on another page
beside the first?

Basically, I need advice on how to scan images (no OCR) into Word and make
them look like the originals. This may be involved with the HP software,
but I am having problems telling what controls the scans since doing the
exact same action will yield different results.

If you have Adobe Acrobat 5 or later (the full version, not just
the free Adobe Reader), then you should be able to scan directly
to Acrobat (you don't need to scan into Word and then convert to
..pdf).

I don't think my HP software will do that, at least not what I have
installed now. I also do not have a complete PDF package, so I was going to
use one of the free PDF printers to make the PDF after I had loaded the
images in Word.

My HP software will allow me to print to a PDF, since I have installed a
free PDF writer, but it doesn't appear it will allow me to do multiple pages
at once. If I had a full version of something so I could combine (merge)
several PDFs into 1, I might do that, but I don't have it. That is why I am
trying to scan all 30 pages into Word and then make a PDF. It should work
that way, just very time consuming..

If I can't get it to go, I might have to buy a PDF writer with the
capability of merging files, but since this is a one time only project, I
hate to spend the money.

I found the way to get the HP software to write multiple pages to the PDF
file. It seems to work great and will save me hours!! I had to select
"Text & Image" in the HP Precisionscan Pro software, so it would save as a
PDF and ask if more pages needed to be added.

No matter how you scan (if your HP software is similar to mine), there's a
check box for "Prompt to scan another page." If you check that, it will ask
whether you want to add another scan to the same document even if you're
scanning to plain text.

OK, thanks. I think I was installing software for the PDF writer and some
options weren't available until I restarted. They are now, and the
resulting file is much smaller than putting it in Word first.
