Nice little tool Bill Dilworth wrote does just what you need. It's an add-in
and it is available for free from this PPT FAQ page:
Slide numbering - Slide XX of YY http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00548.htm
You need to go into View, Slide Master, Bottom right of the screen in the
"Number Area" edit so that it looks like this Slide <#> of XX (XX being the
total number of sides in your presentation.) Then
click on View, Header and Footer, and put a check mark in the Slide number Box,
and click Apply

I want to put "page x of (total number of pages)" on the footer of my slides. Is
