Adding old hard drive to new computer

Could someone point me to a tutorial for adding an old HD to a new
system. Both systems are Gateways and have Windows XP Home installed.
The old system's motherboard is fried so I cannot access it to store or
transfer files. I have on four occasions successfully added a new
unformatted HD to computers but never a pre-formatted one with an OS
installed. I would like to put the old HD in the new box as the slave
and then re-install and/or transfer files and programs as the owner sees
fit.

TIA,

It doesn't matter if the HD is empty or formatted and installed with an OS..
your present system will just see it as a slave containing data..

make sure you set the jumper to slave
once the hd is recognized by the bios let it boot to windows.
Windows may not see it right away you may have to go to right click on My
Computer then disk management. You should see it there but it may be seen as
a foreign drive, just tell it to see it as a foreign drive or something like
that.
Or it just may recognize it right away.

I had the exact same situation as the original poster. I added a second
hard drive to my system and I'm querying your answer. The hard drive I
added didn't have a jumper so I left it that way, after installation all
appears fine except it's also recognized as a MASTER containing data. I'm
told newer mobo's don't need you to use jumper pins, is this right and
should my added drive be a slave instead or is it ok to have two masters?
My added HD is on a separate cable and socket . Please correct me.

Mickey.
