Adding new menu to Start

P

Progress City

I want a new menu flyout, similar to My Programs (My Favorite
Programs?), that would be placed right below My Programs, and function
exactly the same way.

Is this possible?

Just looking for a way to simplify access to the few programs that I
use every day....

You can pin programs that you want in the start menu by right clicking on
the program and selecting "pin to start menu"...
Or you can add a folder in the start menu list (like my documents) and add
shortcuts in it. Kelly has a script for you.. (as usual)

column..

It's just about impossible to do this. There are tweaks available that can 'replace' a couple of the optional folders on the right side of the Start Menu like My Pictures or My Music with a folder of your choice, but all these do is open a folder window.

What I usually do is to simply create a new Toolbar, using a folder that contains shortcuts to my most used programs, on the Taskbar. This toolbar can be left on the taskbar or moved to any edge of the screen. You can use the Autohide feature or leave it visible.

You can add folders to

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Start Menu

On Classic Start Menu they show up above Programs.

On XP Start Menu they show up at the top of the Programs list when you point
to All Programs.

Whatever is in the folder(s) show as flyouts when you point to the folders.

I have several of these folders on my Classic Start Menu and use them all of
the time.

If you are the only user or you want to do this for all users on your
PC, go to <C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu> (assuming C
is the drive where WinXP is located). Create a new folder. Put
shortcuts to the executables in that folder. You can even put a folder
inside the folder and put shortcuts there.

As an example, I created a folder named System. In it, I have folders
Configuration (with shortcuts to Add/Remove and System Update), Disc
Tools (with shortcuts to Backup [ntbackup.exe] and Disc Defragmenter
[dfrg.msc]), and Operating System (with shortcuts to Event Viewer,
Regedit, TweakUI, and others). Also in System but not in any folder is
a shortcut to Security Center.

Note, however, this will appear above Programs, not below it.

On the other hand, I also setup the Office Shortcut Bar with buttons for
shortcuts to the applications I use most often. This is at the right of
my screen.

Thanks for the mention and comment, Marian.)

Added info for the poster:

Right click the Start button/Properties/Start Menu/Customize/Advanced.
Scroll down to My Documents/Display as a Menu (ok, ok).

Then right click the Start button/Explore All Users/Programs. Find the
program in question, right click and copy.

Then go to Windows Explorer and scroll down to: Use as an example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\My Documents and paste.

Then go to the Start Menu/My Documents. Your program should be listed there
now and cascading.

Several other options:

Find the .exe of the program in question, right click, Pin to Start Menu.
Note: it won't be on the right hand side nor cascading.

Hi Kelly,
That the old DOS prompt.

Yes, command.com. That's an MS-DOS Prompt.pif on my Start Menu. Shortcut
to MS-DOS Program.
Do you use both in XP?

No, I hardly ever use command.com, just occasionally. But I keep it handy
for whatever.

BTW, that icon is...
IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\PIFMGR.DLL
IconIndex=0
If so, what are differences if any?

When using command.com commands that are typed in command.com are actually
executed by cmd.exe.

command.com needs both autoexec.nt and config.nt or it will not start.
cmd.exe does not need nor use either one.

Starting command.com also starts ntvdm.exe.

command.com is basically for backwards compatibility, some old DOS stuff
needs it.

command.com does not handle long file names.

Just try
cd C:\Documents and Settings
in command.com

Too many parameters - and
