adding music to presentation

G

Guest

I am assisting a student doing a powerpoint presentation and I want to add
some background music. I have a cd and want to play it and use it as a
background. I did the insert, add music from cd, etc. It does not work. I
do not want to buy more software. I am running XP with PowerPoint 2003. I
have looked at all the help and it seems like I can do it. I seem to be
missing something. I want it to run through the whole presentation and save
it with the music. Then I want to go back and add a narrative to each slide.

Would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Could you be a little more explicit on the "It does not work" Do you receive
error messages? Is your PowerPoint 2003 fully updated with all the service
Patches?

Thank you for your response.

I go to insert to Play CD Audio, Fill out the information, tell it to loop
until stopped,
then tell it automatically. I then set up the show. Run the slide show.
When I go back to test it out no music plays with the presentation. I hope
this clears it up.

Thanks.

Mary C.

I start up the CD with music. I then bring up the PowerPoint presentation.

When I go back to test it out no music plays with the presentation.

But when you first insert the CD audio and "run the slide show," the music
plays okay?

So, basically, the music plays and the show runs fine when you first play
the presentation, but the music doesn't play the second time through?

What kind of settings did you specify when you set up the show?

I went back and did it all from scratch and here is what is happening:
1. insert sound from file
2. tell it where music is -- I do this for every slide.
3. I tell it to play automatically
4. I go to custom animation and fill out the infor

When I run the slide show. I see the audio icon. It starts to play and
then when I click to go to the next slide it stops. It does not run
automatically. I followed all the help articles. It seems to click to start
and stop.

Also, do I have to put the sound in every slide? I am almost there but
becoming frustrating. Anything you can do to help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you.

You don't have to put the sound on every slide. Just put it on the slide it
should start on.

In the custom animation settings, make sure you specify "stop playing after
XXX" slides. Put 999 in that box.

With the narrations, ISTR there's an issue with "rehearse timings" and

I am not using "rehearse timings" but am having a problem again when I record
the narration and click to the next slide and continue talking and I save it.
When I play it back it does not record all I have said and seems to stop.

I need your help desperately again. I do not know what I am doing wrong. I
record the narration as it tells me but it seems to cut off some of my talk
and it picks up and then stops. I am sure I am doing something.

Appreciate your help again.

I think PPT's narration is difficult to use. It shouldn't be, but it seems
there are often issues exactly like what you describe. Are you choosing to
link the narration? If not, you might see if that helps.

You also might try doing the narration and then adding the background sound
file. Or, it might be easier to just do the narration in another sound
recording package and inserting it onto each slide or transition as
appropriate.

I hate to keep coming back, but this is getting more and more confusing. I
consider myself pretty computer knowledgeable, but, here goes:

I did the whole presentation without the music and just narration. I
followed all directions and the narration does not work. It just works on
the first slide and that is it. I also wanted to try it as a continuous
presentation to run unattended but that also did not work. I have tried
everyway possible with and without the music and narration. I tell it to
loop until finished and starting with previous slide so I do not have to
click. It does not work automatically. As my student tells me the
presentation is suppose to be like "television" music in the background and a
narration with it.

I don't feel like I am missing anything, but think I am. This used to be so
simple as have done it before. I am using XP and I am PowerPoint 2003. I
looked for any updates but weren't any.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I hate to keep coming back for more
answers but I am getting nuts doing this -- only kidding??

Thanks again.

If you're having that much difficulty, I'd suggest doing the narration as
separate audio files and adding each to the individual slide. Do the taping
in some audio editing software, not in PPT. Audacity is a good, free sound
editor that should work well for this.

Make sure your background sound and the narration files are not both WAVs,
as some sound cards can't play two WAVs at the same time. I'd probably make
the narrations WAVs so they can be embedded in the file, and I'd make the
background track a MP3, which will be linked to the file.

To insert the narration files on each slide so you don't have to click,
embed them into the slide transition. Go to Slide Show|Slide Transition, and
in the transition task pane where it says "sound," scroll to the bottom and
click on "other sound." Navigate to the narration for that slide. You can
only insert WAV files this way, not MP3s.

For a continuous presentation to run unattended, you must set automatic
transitions for each slide. I'd wait until you have the narration complete
and then go in and set the auto transitions for each slide.

I don't know what you mean by this:
loop until finished and starting with previous slide so I do not have to
click

However, if the goal is to have a self-running file, then if you set
autotransitions and then go to Slide Show|Set up Show and specify "kiosk,"
that might make it easier.

I think this is a known issue. You may be able to work around it by
giving it a
bit of extra time ...

Deliver your narration ... pause ... click to next slide ... pause
Deliver your
narration ... and so on.

I need your help desperately again. I do not know what I am doing
wrong. I
record the narration as it tells me but it seems to cut off some of
my
talk
and it picks up and then stops. I am sure I am doing something.

Appreciate your help again.

Thanlks.

Yay!

With the narrations, ISTR there's an issue with "rehearse timings"
and
narrations. I'd suggest you don't use "rehearse timings."

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THE MUSIC IS NOW WORKING.

Now I will go to the narration part of the presentation. I may
need some
help, but hope not.

I went back and did it all from scratch and here is what
is
happening:
1. insert sound from file
2. tell it where music is -- I do this for every slide.
3. I tell it to play automatically
4. I go to custom animation and fill out the infor

When I run the slide show. I see the audio icon. It starts
to
play
and
then when I click to go to the next slide it stops. It does
not
run
automatically. I followed all the help articles. It seems
to
click to
start
and stop.

Also, do I have to put the sound in every slide? I am almost
there but
becoming frustrating. Anything you can do to help would be
greatly
appreciated.

Thanks for the details.

You don't have to put the sound on every slide. Just put it on
the
slide
it
should start on.

In the custom animation settings, make sure you specify "stop
playing
after
XXX" slides. Put 999 in that box.

There's more info here if you need it (but I think the above
should do
the
trick):

Mary,

You may have a problem created by your sound card driver. Go to the
manufactures web site and see if they have a WDM driver for your sound card
card.

As my student tells me the
presentation is suppose to be like "television" music in the background
and a
narration with it.

I don't feel like I am missing anything, but think I am. This used to be
so
simple as have done it before. I am using XP and I am PowerPoint 2003. I
looked for any updates but weren't any.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I hate to keep coming back for more
answers but I am getting nuts doing this -- only kidding??

Thanks again.

I think PPT's narration is difficult to use. It shouldn't be, but it
seems
there are often issues exactly like what you describe. Are you choosing
to
link the narration? If not, you might see if that helps.

You also might try doing the narration and then adding the background
sound
file. Or, it might be easier to just do the narration in another sound
recording package and inserting it onto each slide or transition as
appropriate.

I tried doing the narration as suggested -- starting narration on each
slide,
pausing, click to the next slide, pause, narration, etc.

It still will not record the narration for each slide as I do it. It
still
stops the narration. Do you think there is a problem recording a
narration
with music on the presentation. I looked at the all the options and
seems
everything is set correctly.

I would appreciate any more help as would like to add the narration,
but
if
a problem then maybe I will have to find another way.

Thank you.
