Adding Music To Powerpoint 2003

Need directions to a location that covers the basics of adding music to a
Powerpoint 2003 file.
I download/puchase music from Napster, wma format, and insert it into the
file, but can't get it to play when the slide show starts. I can get it to
play when I double-click the sound icon in the editing mode, but not when I
switch to view slideshow mode. I've used the following steps to insert the
track: After selecting the first slide of the file: Insert, Movies and
Sounds, Sound File, the chosen track. A sound icon appears on the slide.
If you double-click it it plays. If you select view slideshow, it doesn't
play.

Hi Marty

Sound in ppt can be tricky. The good news is you can make it work! Your
sound is set to play on click, you need to goto custom animations and set it
to play automatically or you can adjust when it starts and stops, in the
advanced timeline. You can also set it to play for just that slide or for x
number of slides, depending on the length of the clip of course.
Another way is to invoke the transistions dialogue and insert loopable wav
file, you can find tonnes of good one on the net. The advantage to looping is
that you a lot of control and the file size can be tiny compared to inserting
a big wma, mp3 or full length wav file. Midis are small and can be used too,
but often sound cheesy - remember only wav files can be inserted in the
transistions dialogue. Have a look in the help files, you can start and stop
sounds, adjust the volume (wavs only again). Anything is possible.

Marty,

Music files from Napster (all the online purchase sites) contain DRM
(Digital Rights Management) that prevent you from re-distributing it. As
PowerPoint is a distribution application I'm afraid you won't be able to use
it.

Does that explain why the Napter track will play on double-click in the edit
mode, but won't play automatically (or with a double-click) when in the view
slideshow mode?

There are varing levels of DRM and it's really up to the content owners
selection of it that determines what can be done. My speculation is that if
you move this presentation to another machine it will not work at all.

What about if you single-click the sound icon when you're viewing the
slideshow?

I suspect Austin's right and it's a DRM issue, but just on the off chance --
I'm thinking that maybe your first click is starting the sound but then
you're immediately stopping it with the next click. Sounds, Movies, etc.,
only need a single click in a PPT show.

In edit mode, I need to double-click the sound icon to get the music to
begin.
I view slideshow mode, I need to single-click the sound icon to get the
music to begin.
However, the music and the slide show will not progress simultaneously; I
get one or the other, not both.
Insert:Movies and Sounds: Sound File: Automatically.

Yes, in edit mode, you have to double-click.

But the "background track" thing is a different problem. What you're now
describing is that your sound does indeed play, but your slides won't
advance.

If that's the problem, then see Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV
runs through it)
